Buraku Problem Q & A

Gaps in the College Enrollment Rate

Q Are there any gaps in the college enrollment rate between Buraku students and non- Buraku students ?

A Chart illustrates the constant gap between the ratio of Buraku students advancing to college and that of the national average from the 1970's to 1990's. The chart also indicates that the ratio of Buraku students who enroll in college has remained only half or two-thirds of the prefectural average for decades.

The ratio of Buraku students advancing to college changes almost parallel to that of the national average. When the college enrollment rate decreased at the national level from '75 to '90, the ratio of Buraku students who enrolled in college also decreased. On the other hand, the ratio has been increasing as the ratio of the national average started to increase since 1990, when the population of children 18 years or under gradually began to decrease.

While the college enrollment rate is expected to become higher at national level for the next several years, no factor is found at present to show that the rate of increase of Buraku students' college enrollment rate surpasses that of the national average.
