The BLL holds its 58th National Convention


The 58th National Convention of Buraku Liberation League was held in March in Osaka with 791 participants. The main theme of the Convention was " Towards the Creation of the 21st Century Where Human Rights Are Guaranteed." Topics discussed in the Convention included:

1) Realisation of the Law on the Promotion of Human Rights Education and Human Rights Awareness-Raising enacted last year;

2) Action towards a valid, comprehensive government's report on the status of and remedies for victims of human rights violations;

3) Buraku Liberation Movement after the Law Concerning Special Government Financial Measures for Regional Improvement Special Projects ceases to apply in 2002;

4) Campaign to demand the retrial of the Sayama case.1

In addition, the Headquarter Office introduced the basic plan of four proposed projects, which includes strengthening the organisation and promoting gender-equal participation in the Buraku Liberation Movement. Participants agreed to work towards a new phase of Dowa legislation and administration, establishment of human rights legislation and administration, and a strong organisation.
