Reality of Buraku Discrimination in Japan

History, Situation, Challenge

The Peasant Riots against the Emancipation Edict (1871-1877)

After the Emancipation Edict was issued, some peasants rioted to protest it in more than 20 villages in western Japan. They refused to be placed in the same rank as Buraku people and demanded the retraction of the Edict. Rioting peasants entered some Buraku villages and set fires that resulting in the deaths of many residents.
