Reality of Buraku Discrimination in Japan

History, Situation, Challenge

The International Movement Against All Forms of Discrimination and Racism (IMADR)

Since the time that Mr. Jiichiro Matsumoto, the second President of the National Levelers Association, advocated 'the Levelers movement around the world', the international movement against discrimination has been one of the most important programs of the Buraku liberation movement. In 1988, IMADR was founded to work towards the elimination of discrimination against the Buraku and Dalit people, the elimination of racial discrimination in general, the protection of the rights of indigenous peoples and to protest against human rights oppression in different parts of the world. Mr. Saichiro Uesugi, then President of the Buraku Liberation League (BLL), assumed office as President of IMADR. In 1993, IMADR, as an NGO, was granted consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council.
