Reality of Buraku Discrimination in Japan

History, Situation, Challenge

The Campaign for the Ratification of International Covenants (1977-1979)

In support of the efforts of human rights protection at the UN level, a nationwide coalition was organized to drive a campaign for Japan's ratification of the International Covenants for the purpose of eliminating Buraku discrimination, racial discrimination against foreign residents, and promoting human rights throughout the country. As a result, in June 1979, Japan ratified the Covenants. The Buraku liberation movement played an important part in the campaign.
