Reality of Buraku Discrimination in Japan

History, Situation, Challenge

Shoemaking

Shoemaking developed in Buraku communities as a cottage industry and part of the overall leather industry. Shoemaking businesses were usually quite small in size, but at the end of the 1960s they were severely affected by the entrance of big businesses into the industry. Shoemaking skills and technology are also used for making other types of footwear such as sandals.
