The Drum, or taiko, is one of the most popular musical instruments in Japan. Drum-making is a special skill that Buraku people have developed over many decades. A cylinder of hard wood is made by using wood from trees such as cherry or keyaki. Cylinder making and covering the cylinder with leather require a great deal of skill.
