Reality of Buraku Discrimination in Japan

History, Situation, Challenge

Marriage Discrimination

The rate of marriage between Buraku and non-Buraku people has been increasing, but there are still many incidents where couples face opposition to their marriage due to prejudice against Buraku people. A 1993 government survey revealed that over half of the marriages that occur between Buraku and non-Buraku people encounter objection. The couple in this photo married despite strong opposition from the non-Buraku parents, who have been refusing to communicate with the couple since their marriage.
