Reality of Buraku Discrimination in Japan

History, Situation, Challenge

The Reality of Buraku Discrimination

We would like to explain about the reality of discrimination against Buraku people in Japan by using data from surveys conducted by government agencies. The data related to Buraku is mainly taken from the 1993 survey to Grasp the Actual Conditions of Dowa Areas conducted by the Policy Office of Regional Improvement of the Management and Coordination Agency. In comparison with the 1993 survey, the 1985 Buraku data is taken from the Survey to Grasp the Actual Conditions Regarding Regional Enlightenment. National data is mainly taken from the 1990 National Census and the 1992 Employment Status Survey.

Based on this data, we can see that despite conditions having been improved thanks to the efforts of many dedicated people and organizations, Buraku Discrimination is still a serious problem in the areas of economic conditions, employment, education and human rights protection.
