Reality of Buraku Discrimination in Japan

History, Situation, Challenge

Mr. Jiichiro Matsumoto (1887-1966)

Mr. Jiichiro Matsumoto was the most outstanding pre and post-War leader of the Buraku liberation movement. He assumed the position of the second President of the National Levelers Association. From that time onwards he proved himself to be a consistently great leader of the movement. In spite of oppression and imprisonment, he devoted his entire life to the movement for Buraku liberation and was also an elected member of parliament for nearly 30 years. He assumed the position of Vice-President of the Upper House after the war. During his terms of office as a member of parliament, he committed himself to the enactment of the Law on Special Measures for Dowa Projects. He has been called the "Father of Buraku Liberation".
