Reality of Buraku Discrimination in Japan

History, Situation, Challenge

The Serada Village Incident (1925)

This was an incident in which about 3,000 non-Buraku people ignored their promises to apologize for discriminatory remarks that they had made and attacked 15 households of Buraku people in Serada Village, Gunma prefecture who were deeply involved in the Levelers Movement. These people set fires, attacked villagers and destroyed their homes. The authorities, who feared the Levelers Movement, condoned the attack which further increased the punishment of the Buraku victims of it.
