Reality of Buraku Discrimination in Japan

History, Situation, Challenge

The Denunciation Struggle Against Marriage Discrimination in Takamatsu (1933)

The National Levelers Association initiated a nationwide campaign against the judgment in a court case which saw the prosecution of a man for the charge of "marriage-kidnapping" as he married without disclosing his Buraku family background. The accused man was found guilty and sentenced at the first trial. The Levelers Association organized a nationwide march calling for cancellation of the court decision. Even though this occurred in wartime Japan, the Levelers Movement was greatly stimulated by the struggle.
