Reality of Buraku Discrimination in Japan

History, Situation, Challenge

Employment

With the skills and experience that discriminated against people (the eta class) gained by being engaged in disposing dead cattle during the Edo era, they developed so-called Buraku industries such as leather production and meat production. Different skills have been developed in Buraku industries and these skills have been passed down through generations. Drum making is one of the typical skills that is nurtured in several Buraku communities. When Buraku communities want to develop Buraku industries, however, they have to be fairly large in size. In practice, there are few Buraku communities that are large enough to do so. In many Buraku communities people are therefore forced to work in small businesses and unemployment is a large problem. Thanks to special measures such as improvement of the living environment and scholarship programs, the employment situation of younger people has been improved, but the lower unemployment rate of the middle-aged has yet to be resolved.
